An excellent and very approachable book on trauma, childhood experiences, healing, and growth。 For teachers, youth workers, church leaders and parents, I would highly recommend this conversational and well-researched book。 A series of case studies make this interesting and life-applicable, while also exploring up-to-date research on trauma and resilience。

Shannon Kapek,
I loved this audiobook! Both authors were exceptionally good narrators; they made listening enjoyable and easy。 The content was fascinating。 I love the concept of asking "What happened to you?" rather than "What is wrong with you?"。 All kinds of childhood trauma cause problems throughout one's life until dealt with in a healthy way。 Sensory stimuli can trigger reactions that aren't anticipated or understood。 Reading or listening to this book, whether one has personally experienced trauma or not, I loved this audiobook! Listened to this through Audible。 Narrated by Oprah and psychiatrist Bruce Perry。 This book mentioned often throughout the book about changing the perspective of asking someone “what’s wrong with you” and instead to ask “what happened to you”。 Oprah shares several childhood stories of trauma and also mentions traumatic stories from her show and even have the clip from the show in the audible so that we hear other voices from other families and children about childhood abuse and neglect which I t Listened to this through Audible。 Narrated by Oprah and psychiatrist Bruce Perry。 This book mentioned often throughout the book about changing the perspective of asking someone “what’s wrong with you” and instead to ask “what happened to you”。 Oprah shares several childhood stories of trauma and also mentions traumatic stories from her show and even have the clip from the show in the audible so that we hear other voices from other families and children about childhood abuse and neglect which I thought was awesome! Oprah often asks Bruce why do people behave and speak the way they do when dealing with trauma and what exactly goes on in the brain and how the brain works when people are experiencing trauma which was interesting。Overall lots of info about how trauma happens, how it affects people and how it affects them later in life with jobs, relationships, etc, how people try to cope with their trauma through drugs and how do properly deal with traumaGreat book for anyone and everyone to read/listen to! I said trauma way to much but whatever 。。。more

Wow! I LOVED this book! It’s so rich, deeply transformational and accessible。 I got it on Kindle, but ended up listening to the audio version - which was like eavesdropping on two wise teacher-friends, as it’s narrated by Oprah and Dr Perry。 I’ll certainly return to this gem a few more times!

Life changingThis wonderful book opened up a way to hope for me。 It helped me understand myself more clearly。 I always thought that if you really want something and if you toughened up you could get it。 I’ve been stuck in the same patterns for years and thought that was my fault, I had to toughened up more。 I would fail again and again and thought something was wrong with me。 “What happened to me” helped me understand what happened to me and why I was functioning this way。 This book gave me the Life changingThis wonderful book opened up a way to hope for me。 It helped me understand myself more clearly。 I always thought that if you really want something and if you toughened up you could get it。 I’ve been stuck in the same patterns for years and thought that was my fault, I had to toughened up more。 I would fail again and again and thought something was wrong with me。 “What happened to me” helped me understand what happened to me and why I was functioning this way。 This book gave me the understanding I needed to start healing and understand, okay this pattern is here because of what happened to me and I can change it by caring deeply for myself with no judgments and drop all the harshness I use to attach to getting out of patterns and getting better。 My work to healing and getting better starts here。 Thank you for this book。 。。。more

A healing journey like no other。。。For some strange reason I felt peace while going through the pages of this book。 As though I was revisiting past traumatic experiences not as a victim but as a student。 I felt like I was standing outside myself and studying how past traumas have shaped my thinking and behavior。 Understanding that the brain makes memories and associations based on past experiences is so enlightening and liberating at the same time。 Even more liberating is the understanding that w A healing journey like no other。。。For some strange reason I felt peace while going through the pages of this book。 As though I was revisiting past traumatic experiences not as a victim but as a student。 I felt like I was standing outside myself and studying how past traumas have shaped my thinking and behavior。 Understanding that the brain makes memories and associations based on past experiences is so enlightening and liberating at the same time。 Even more liberating is the understanding that with intentionality we can retrain the brain and build new associations。 Reading this book felt like being given a gift of wisdom。 There were a lot of aha moments for me。。。 I expected to be sad while reading it。 But on the contrary I received the power to live from a place of enlightenment。 The whole reading session felt like a spiritual encounter。 #Itstimetoheal 。。。more
Whitney Campbell,
This is the kind of stuff I read on my day off from doing trauma work。 I thought this was an excellent book on trauma and trauma informed care that is accessible to anyone wanting to learn more about trauma work。 This was also great to read as someone feeling some intense compassion fatigue these days。 It is always a great to have a refresher to help me reframe and refocus my work so that compassion fatigue doesn’t just completely wipe me out。 I would recommend this to lay people and even other This is the kind of stuff I read on my day off from doing trauma work。 I thought this was an excellent book on trauma and trauma informed care that is accessible to anyone wanting to learn more about trauma work。 This was also great to read as someone feeling some intense compassion fatigue these days。 It is always a great to have a refresher to help me reframe and refocus my work so that compassion fatigue doesn’t just completely wipe me out。 I would recommend this to lay people and even other therapists that need to shift focus work。 。。。more
